UNDER ROOF

This is the team for the second week here at Zion. Brayden is Ron and Becky's grandson and has joined NOMADS to work with us on his spring break. Becky left on Sunday to go help with Ron's cousin who is very ill.
Brayden started with hammering on the hurricane straps.
Larry B and Ron putting on the rest of the trusses.
They patched the back roof with the metal we took off the front roof. We all thought the opening made a nice sky light.
Ginger and Brayden putting on cross beams.
Larry put on the front fascia board..
Brayden cutting some of the wood. Ginger and Larry B welcomed Brayden to NOMADS by giving him his own tool belt. He is official now.
Now that all of the metal is off the front roof and the trusses are finished it was time to install the  new metal roofing.
This big palm tree was too close to the back of the building so Bruce, a member from this church, cut it down.

Fran spent a day scraping the rest of the building.
The palm  tree was causing the back wall to crack, so Fran took out the old mortar and then filled the crack in with new.
Larry B and Ron cut the old metal roofing to use on the back roof.
Larry and I helped put on the new roofing.
The sun reflecting off the roof made it a hot job.
The next day Ginger and Brayden had the front portion finished so she helped Larry get the rest of the roof on.
Becky was back with us by Thursday so she and Fran painted the building with Kilz.
Larry taught and helped me mix the bags of cement to fill in these holes.
The building was painted and the roof on by the end of the week.
We ended the week with toppling the last lean-to.

ZION UMC

We came to Ocala On March 11 to work at Zion UMC.
It is a very welcoming church.  We are parked right behind it.
The property across the street use to belong to the propane company and sold it to the church when they moved to a new location.
We are going to fix up the old loading dock to make it usable for the church functions.
The roof needs a lot of work.

A little building on the side needs fixing up.

On Monday we started by taking down the fence and cleaning up a little.
Ginger and Becky removed part of the roofing.
Ron and Larry( another Larry) started work on the roof support system. Much of the wood is rotten  and needed to be replaced, or reinforced.thereby straightening the trusses.
Ginger and Becky got the roofing off and moved on to their next demolition job.
Taking down this structure, but carefully so the roofing can be reused.

Ron and Larry making a new support beam for the roof.
 Now does it fit?
 Yes.
Larry cut off the pipes so the ladies could continue demolition.
Joe, a member of the church, worked all morning removing the metal plates on the floor.
Without his tools, we would have never gotten the metal off. We sure appreciated his help.
Fran and Dottie worked on fixing up this building. First was to clean it out.
Joe cut off the metal pipes.
We scraped off the pealing paint.
We cut plywood to cover the holes to make forms to pour in cement.
 We wired on the wood.
 Mixed the cement.
And poured it into the holes.
Now we have to fill in the top of the holes.
Lots of new trusses put up and now to extend the roof over the entire concrete pad.

Ginger and Becky have one lean-to demolished and on to the second. Made it a little easier by knocking it over and then removing the metal roofing.
Larry and Ron working on the new trusses.

Larry couldn't resist getting on a ladder and giving a hand, even with the boot on his foot.
A lot of progress made by the end of a very hot week.
This church has blessed us with giving us lunch and dinner every day. These ladies came and took us to their house on Tuesday, since the church was a polling location. It was an evening of great food, fellowship and laughter.
