OUR FIRST WEEK AT EPWORTH UMC

We arrived in Phoenix at the Epwoth UMC on Thursday, January23, 2014.
We were greeted right away and they had all the hook ups ready for our group to come in.

All six rigs were here by Saturday afternoon and we had the wagons circled.
We always started our days here in the lounge with devotions.

One big project was to clear this room , remove the paneling from one of the  walls and turn this room into a place for some children to go when needed during church.

After Jack removed the paneling. Tom hung the drywall and mudded it.

The Boy Scout shed on the church property had been broken into and doors needed replaced.
Bob and Marvin took off the old doors.
Jack and Bob built new doors and got them hung with some help from Larry.
After the doors were on, we fixed up the rest of the building. Larry repaired some of the wood and Paige and Janice scraped off the peeling paint.
Barb pinting on the kilz.
On the roof the conduit needed repaired and the lights on this cross fixed.
Larry,Bob and Jack completed the roof work.
The gutters were cleaned by Ogie, Paige and me.
After they were cleaned Melvin and Barb got the places where the gutters were leaking repaired.
The last group of NOMADS build these cabinets in the fellowship hall. Mervin finished putting locks on all of them.
Janice and Barb organized this closet in  the church.
they got some help to build a table,
and put in some hooks.
One job finished.

The organ was needed to be moved out of the way and into a corner on the alter. It took all the guys to move it.
Bill and Ogie replaced three post on this pavilion. Bill had just returned from a trip he had to  make this week to Hawaii, so we were glad to have him back with us.

Paige fixing the caulk in the boy's restroom.
Ogie sanding the boy's bathroom door and then it was painted.
The church provided us with delicious snacks each morning and afternoon.
We ended our week with Mexican dinner at Popo's. A lot of work was accomplished and we are excited to see each project completed next week or two.

ARIZONA LUNCHEON

We made it to Arizona on Thursday, January 9th. We had stopped at Camping World in El Paso, TX to see about getting our front right air bag repaired when Larry realized it should be done at a Freightliner Service Center. Luckily there was one in El Paso, just 35 miles back east to the other side of town. After diagnosing the problem they had a new airbag overnighted and we were on our way with just a little delay.
God really blessed us for we wouldn't have made it much further for the hole was getting larger and larger In the airbag, and we had just driven 500 miles on Route 10 without even seeing a town, let alone a freighliner service center.

We are staying  at Verde Valley TT until  period 2. It is about 100 miles north of Phoenix. On Saturday we drove back down Hwy 17 to Phoenix and attended the NOMADS luncheon.
Mary and Don Becker were the host. We had a delicious covered dish lunch and then Mary entertained us with her new puppet friend.
They were the leaders of the group working in Tuscon.
They were leading a project in Phoenix

and this couple were leading another project. Mary and Don were also leading a project during this period so a lot of work is being done in AZ. There were a total of 58 NOMADS at the luncheon, but some of us were not working this period. Mary did say that many projects in the southwest are having to be cancelled because there are no leaders for them. So her plea is to sign up and lead when you can.

Two board members were at the luncheon. A certificate was given this couple for working over 50 projects. His shoulders have given out but his passion for NOMADS hasn't.
This couple reminded us that they now have new opportunities for NOMADS to work projects in Alaska and Washington, so check out the NOMADS web page.
Always good hearing from our board members and what great things God is doing through NOMADS.

FINISHING UP

On Sunday evening we went into the Bastrop Methodist church for a light meal and then they decorated the tree in the sanctuary. If you watch the movie Bernie you will recognize the inside of this church. Larry and I went to the tradition service in the morning so we could hear the organ.
Monday was very warm, in the 80's. We went back to the house we were working on last week to finish the steps and ramp. Vicki and I put the spindles down the back steps.
The front steps had to be moved for they were in the way of the ramp.
Larry moved the steps, then on Tuesday he had to create a lower platform for the last step was too high. Looks great when finished.

The ramp took us to Wednesday afternoon to complete.
Sue drilled in a lot of boards,
John cut the boards for the ramp and railings.
Vicki and Steve cut spindles to the correct length.
Vicki then drilled the spindles so they could be screwed on easier.
A lot happening, sure were a lot of spindles to screw on!
Dan getting the railing attached.
Almost done, Dan just smoothing off the hand rails and all the corners. It looks beautiful and the home owner was very grateful.
While we were working on the decks and ramps the rest of the team was at this metal house. The original house had burned down and the son repoured the cement foundation and built this metal structure. It is to be his mother's home but for know he and his family of five are living here till they can build their own home. Part of our challenge was working around them (home schooled) and their belongings, three electricians/plumbers, and all the material.
The doors and windows needed to be framed. What a job!
 Avis and Shirley tackled it!
 Great job!
Wednesday afternoon after we were done with the ramp Larry and I went over to the house to see what we all  would be doing here tomorrow.  I sprayed  some Great Stuff foam to close up some of the spaces where mice were getting into the house. The home owner said they had been told to expect mice after the fires but they didn't understand how bad it would be. Neither did we.
This is how we are fighting the mice population at the RV. Godiva caught three inside and two outside ( which she proceeded to bring in). We all have had some mice in our units since the day we arrived. Shirley and Paul have it the jackpot so far with 13!!
Notice the change in clothing. It turned COLD on Thursday.  Larry, Dan, John and Steve had to empty this shed of a washer and dryer and then turn and put it on the concrete pad.

Dan and John emptying the water heater and getting it ready to put in the shed.
Avis checking that the wall was level in this small bathroom after installing the dry wall.
Paul built  the ceiling boards to attach the dry wall for the ceiling in the bathroom (only rooms with ceilings)

The drywall the family had hung was too close to the floor so Sue and I had to cut 1/2 inch off the bottom of them all.
Gary screwing on the drywall up high, 12 foot walls
Opps, some of the dry wall had to be disassembles so the proper wall studs could be installed to screw on the drywall.
We have Steve off the ladder and on his knees. There were a lot of screws to be drilled in a little further, good to check before mudding.

 Avis drywalling the doorway.

Dan and John framed out the front and back door.
Larry framed around a metal steel beam.
Shirley working on framing another window.
 Sue mudding the corner.
 Gary mudding the seams.
A lot of work was accomplished this week, but there is sure a lot more to be done here before this house is finished. Shirley and Paul are now the leaders and I'm sure all will be very busy and do great works.
